College and Campus Central with Grace Fielder

Friday, October 28, 2016 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm
Location: Student Union Memorial Center, Kiva Room

Missionaries, Bible Translation and the Awakening of National Identity in the Balkans

Join us for a free event with Russian and Slavic Studies Professor Grace Fielder. Grace will guide us through a time in 19th century history when the Ottoman Empire’s strength waned and the identity of the inhabitants was used for political and national boundary gain. With language driving identity, learn how the proselytizing activities by British and American missionaries were key in the emergence of a new national and ethnic consciousness.

This event is part of the UA Alumni Association's College and Campus Central and is free and open to the public.
