Department of German Studies

The Department of German Studies provides undergraduate instruction designed to develop oral and written communication proficiencies; intercultural competence, insights into language form, usage and meaning; and knowledge of German literature, cultural history, and contemporary issues in the German-speaking world. Scholarships are available such as the Weinel Scholarship, the German Studies Scholarship, and the Minority Scholarship. Various study abroad and exchange programs are available including the department’s intensive one-month study abroad program in Leipzig during the summer. Many students also study at the Deutsche Sommerschule in Taos, New Mexico. A major in German Studies, by itself or in combination with another field, can open the door to careers in education, international business, foreign service, and many other professions.

In addition to the the Bachelor of Arts, the Department offers programs leading to the Master of Arts in German Studies and the joint Ph.D. with University of Arizona/ University of Leipzig Ph.D. in Trancultural German Studies/DaF.
