Scheduling of Competitions
-
Competitions are scheduled to run between 10:00am and 1:00pm.
-
The scheduling of the Individual poetry/prose recitations and the drama group performances is organized to keep similar age and level competitors in the same room, and to facilitate the judging. Cancellations disrupt the thoughtful and complicated scheduling, to the detriment of the judges and also to the students still competing in a particular room.
-
If a student is competing in both individual recitation and group drama and finds that both competitions are scheduled at the same time, the student should prioritize the drama performance. The student can then proceed to the recitation classroom as assigned, and check in with the classroom monitor. Judges will accept the late recitation time.
- Advise your students/parents that competition times will be posted on-line in late March, on the Southern Arizona Language Fair Webpage:
There will be no printed Fair programs on April 2, so advise students to print out their schedule pages before coming to the UA campus on Fair day.
Competitions
-
Rules for the poetry/prose recitation and drama performances are linked on the right.
-
All students competing should have copies of these rules, as well as copies of the sample Score Sheets. Details such as poetry word count minimums and drama performance length are closely adhered to by the judges: not paying attention to such details could result in lost points and perhaps not placing.
- Note that the Fair not only celebrates Arizona language students’ accomplishments, but the work of language teachers. To continue to highlight the teachers’ important roles, students can only compete in the Southern Arizona Language Fair if they are receiving regular instruction in a second language. Heritage speakers who are not currently being instructed in their heritage language may not compete. Contact Diane Davis or Pat Brooks with questions.
