Tucson Festival of Books 2011
The College of Humanities will be participating in the Tucson Festival of Books again this year, part of the forest of white tents sprouting up March 12 and 13 to welcome an expected 100,000 people to the UA campus. Stop by our four tents, each offering information about College programs, literary-cultural-language opportunities for the community, and access to –of course- wonderful books and authors.

At the UA Poetry Center tent (Booth #283), find out about poetry workshops, book clubs, outreach programs for children and youth, and about the 50th anniversary of this internationally acclaimed literary institution. Learn about the Poetry Center’s extensive collection, its digital collection of readings by the numerous preeminent writers who have presented at the Poetry Center, its striking and thoughtfully-conceived building, and much more. The Poetry Center will also be hosting Writing Workshops at the Festival. See http://poetry.arizona.edu for Worshop topics, locations, days and times.

Right next to the Poetry Center, in Booth #282, the Humanities Seminars Program promotes the intriguing and high-quality classes that have been offered to the Tucson community since 1984. These classes for adult learners are all taught by present and former University of Arizona professors who are selected for their scholarly accomplishments and exceptional teaching abilities. Stop by the tent to meet current “seminarians” who are passionate about the Program and who will want to let you know about the courses coming up in Summer and Fall 2011. See http://hsp.arizona.edu for details about these courses and much more about this special College of Humanities program.

The College of Humanities promotes its many departments and programs in Booth #281, including a display of publications from faculty across the College. The diversity and range of research areas reflected in the books is testimony to the interdisciplinary passions of the College’s award-winning teachers. For your own direct experience with the College’s faculty in the near future, pick up a bookmark that will remind you about the College’s 4th annual “Humanities Week”, October 17-21, 2011. Humanities Week brings the College’s top professors to the community, in mostly free lectures and events. Finally, stop by Booth #262 to talk with representatives of the Department of English. The highly-ranked Creative Writing Program is an exciting and popular choice as a major by entering freshmen. Find out why it –and the English major- are so attractive and successful at the University of Arizona. Alumns of this Department include Richard Russo (Empire Falls), and well-known author-professors include Richard Shelton (Going Back to Bisbee), Aurelie Sheehan (History Lessons for Girls), Ander Monson (Vanishing Point), and Alison Hawthorne Deming (Rope). See you at the Festival!
