The College of Humanities is pleased to announce the 2018-19 Faculty Research Grants Program, which is designed to support innovative humanities research in the coming year.
The application deadline is October 25, 2019. The online application for this program will be posted on this website in late August.
All awards are competitive and based on resources available, up to a maximum of $5,000.
Applicants are encouraged to show financial and/or in-kind support from other sources.
Who is eligible to apply?
Tenured and tenure-track faculty at all levels of appointment in the College of Humanities who did not receive a COH Faculty Research Grant last year are eligible.
Proposals that demonstrate strength in one or more of the following will likely be particularly competitive:
- Clarity and reasonableness of the narrative, procedures, timeline, line-item budget, and budget justification;
- Significance of the project to the academic dossiers and careers of the applicant(s);
- Potential for creating new knowledge or creative expression that will bring national or international recognition to the College;
- Potential for the project to forge connections between the College and local and regional communities and partners;
- Significance of the project to enhance the core values and vision of the College;
- Potential for the project to disseminate/promote/highlight diversity and inclusion;
- Potential for the project to receive additional funding from other sources, especially those that are external to the University of Arizona. Projects with the potential for generating outside funding will be especially competitive.
What Kinds of Expenses Are Eligible for Support?
Examples of expenses eligible for support from the COH Faculty Research Grants Program include:
- Summer salary or other types of supplemental compensation for faculty;
- Expenses for travel to conferences, archives, academic institutions, libraries, etc. (local, national, and international);
- Guest speakers or consultants on campus;
- Hosting research-oriented symposia and other such events;
- Books and other materials that are necessary for a particular research project;
- Publication subventions;
- Writing and other faculty development coaches/consultants;
- Sabbatical replacement funds (full academic year sabbaticals only).
What Kinds of Expenses are Ineligible for Support?
Activities appearing on the list below are there not because they are not valued by the College but because limited resources do not allow funding for such endeavors. Please consult your unit’s business manager with questions. In some cases, projects such as those below may be eligible for funding through alternative sources on campus (see list below).
- Conventional office equipment such as computers and printers;
- Proposals for events/projects that have already been completed or lack sufficient lead time.
Please be prepared to submit the following:
- Project Title
- Project Abstract (maximum 50 words).
- Project Description (maximum 750 words). Please be mindful that projects described in a compelling manner are likely to be more competitive.
- Budget Justification (maximum 250 words). It is important that you work with your unit’s budget manager to develop your proposal’s budget. The budget justification should explain the necessity of each item. In addition, please list any other potential or pending sources of funding and indicate the status of those applications/requests. Please refer to the budget section of the application for additional details.
- A detailed and realistic line-item budget (maximum 1 page). Similar to your budget justification, please work with your unit’s budget manager and refer to the budget section of the application for additional details.
- The applicant’s CV that highlights efforts applicable to the proposal.
Applications also require an endorsement from the applicant’s department head/director. Please identify the appropriate head/director in your application and an email will automatically be sent to that person with your application materials.

Awardees will be notified approximately six weeks after the deadline. Grants funds must be used within one calendar year from the date of notification.
Recipients of grants will be expected to:
- Use grant funds within one calendar year from the date of notification.
- Clearly identify the COH Faculty Research Grants Program as a funding source for any resulting publications.
- File a brief report on the outcome of the project within 60 days of project completion. The report should be an abstract (250-word maximum) that highlights the project’s success and outlines any plans to expand the project externally (e.g., bring national or international recognition to the College, forge connections with the local and regional community, receive additional funding from other non-UA sources). Abstracts may be used for COH marketing purposes.
