Spring 2018 Pre-Commencement Ceremony FAQ’s

  • What time should I arrive?
    Doors open at 8:00 a.m., and the ceremony begins promptly at 9:00 a.m. Check-in is not required, but we do ask that graduates arrive and take their seats at the front of the ballroom no later than 8:30 a.m.
  • What will I receive at the Pre-Commencement Ceremony?
    This is a celebratory pre-commencement ceremony, not an official confirmation of your degree. At the ceremony, each graduate will receive a medallion as a gift from the College of Humanities.
  • Where do Graduates sit?
    Reserved seating for graduates is designated toward the front of the ballroom. Seating is open (not in alphabetical order) for graduates in that area.
  • Do my guests need tickets?
    No, we do not hand out physical tickets. Your guests can simply arrive at the ballroom on the day of the ceremony.
  • Where do guests sit?
    Open seating is provided for family and guests in the ballroom.
  • Is the ceremony wheelchair accessible?
    Yes. There is a wheelchair accessible ramp located on stage as well as wheelchair seating for graduates and guests attending the ceremony. Please let our Event Team know if you require assistance or more information.
  • How will my name be read?
    Name cards will be placed on each seat in the graduate seating section. You will fill out the name card and carry it to the stage for the reading of your name and degree. Please make sure all your information is accurate; provide phonetic spelling if necessary.
  • What do I do when I exit the stage?
    The Event Team will guide graduates back to their appropriate rows as they exit the stage. Please return to your seat promptly and remain seated until all names are called to give each graduate equal time to be recognized. There will be ample time after the ceremony to take photos with family, friends, professors and the Dean. Please do not attempt to greet family/friends or leave the seating area during the ceremony as it may cause a disruption.
  • Can my family/friends take pictures during the ceremony?
    YES! There is a center aisle that can be used to take a photo of each graduate as he or she is shaking the Dean’s hand. We ask that anyone taking pictures please remain behind the ropes and return to their seats promptly. Note, there are no other official photos that will be made available to you.
  • What do I wear?
    You must purchase a cap and gown from the Student Union Bookstore. Bookstore staff are on hand for fitting and specific regalia inquiries. Tassels can be worn on the right side for the entire ceremony. Business/Business Casual attire is acceptable to wear underneath your graduate regalia.
  • Where do I get a program?
    Volunteers will hand out programs at the ceremony entrance. Extra copies will be available.
  • Will there be video of the event?
    Yes. We will be videotaping and livestreaming the event. A link will be provided in your RSVP email that you can share with family and friends.
