Whitman Circle Summer Social: Talk by Alberto Álvaro Ríos on "Magical Realism in the 21st Century"

Wednesday, August 26, 2015 - 5:30pm
Hotel Congress 311 E. Congress Street Tucson Tucson, AZ

Arizona State Poet Laureate Alberto Álvaro Ríos gives a talk on "Magical Realism in the 21st Century." This event will be held on August 26th, at 5:30pm at the Copper Room in Hotel Congress, and will be hosted by the Poetry Center's Walt Whitman Circle. Refreshments will be provided.

From the talk:  "Magical Realism is not so much about ghosts as possibility; not so much about the strange as the personal; not so much about science as singular circumstance, what might be called personal science.  It is a literature in continual exception to the rule.  In this country, we think of ourselves as founded upon precepts of individualism, while at the same time individualism—or difference, which is what that really means—is what scares us most."
