Buddhist Studies Lecture Series - "Reading a Zen Classic: The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch"

Tuesday, March 3, 2015 - 9:00am to 10:30am
UA Poetry Center, Rubel Room 1508 E. Helen Street Tucson, AZ 85721

Dr. Albert Welter presents: "Reading a Zen Classic: The Platform Sutra of the Sixth Patriarch."

The Platform Sutra is a classic work of the Zen (Chinese Chan) Buddhist tradition. It tells the story of the Zen hero, Huineng, and his quest to inherit the “true Dharma eye” and become recognized as the Sixth Patriarch. The lecture will highlight enduring Zen themes, while explaining how the modern reception of this classic has become a fascinating story of its own.

This is the first installment of the three-part lecture series that will take place this spring. Join us for the next installments:

April 14th: Celestino Fernandez, PhD - Happiness and Buddhism

May 5th: Jiang Wu, PhD - Religious Imagination in the World of Lotus Sutra

These events are free and open to the public, and are co-sponsored by the College of Humanities' East Asian Studies Department and the Confluencenter for Creative Inquiry.
