Poetry Center Youth Program: Moonlight, Starbright, Poe Night

When
5 to 8 p.m., Jan. 15, 2016

Edgar Allan Poe has long been known as the father of the mystery and detective novel, but he also helped to pioneer the genre of science fiction. This night of interactive activities for the whole family will highlight Poe’s interest in cosmology and will feature telescope viewing at Steward Observatory, a meteorite show-and-tell from Lunar Planetary Lab, interactive writing activities, and a hot-chocolate bar. A special planetarium show at Flandreau Science Center will feature images of the night sky as Poe may have seen in his lifetime, while listening to experts in the field read excerpts of his work set to music by Chamber Lab’s Chris Black. Lectures and demonstrations by UA science and literature experts will showcase what Poe knew about science, where his imagination departed from fact, and how what we know about the cosmos has changed over time. This event is presented as part of Literacy Connects Big Read and is co-sponsored by Flandrau Science Center, Steward Observatory, and the Lunary Planetary Lab. This entire event takes place at Steward Observatory and Flandrau Science Center and NOT the Poetry Center.
