"On the Road Again..." Time, Space, and Identity in the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Age.
This symposium brings together scholars in the field of Medieval and Early Modern Studies (up to ca. 1800) working on concepts such as: travel and space, local and global identity, transculturality, transnationality, geographic concepts, scientific explorations of the earth, conditions of travel, etc. The guiding principles are: how did individuals experience the foreign world, how did they move around, how did they learn from other cultures, and how did they communicate across barriers in language, religion, politics, and ethnicity in the premodern world.
Organizer and Chair: Dr. Albrecht Classen, University Distinguished Professor.
