One professor in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese has been promoted, demonstrating excellent performance in teaching, service and research.
Dr. Miquel Simonet is promoted from tenured Associate Professor to tenured Professor. He received his Ph.D. in Romance Linguistics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Dr. Simonet is an experimental, laboratory phonologist, employing the auxiliary theories and methods of instrumental phonetics and experimental psycholinguistics to investigate phonological competence and representation. His main area of expertise comprises bilingual and second-language phonological competence, which analyzes the production, perception, and processing of the sounds and structure words in emergent bilinguals.
He currently serves as Associate Editor of Journal of Phonetics (2022-2025) and previously served as Associate Editor of Applied Psycholinguistics (2018-2021).
His publications have appeared in journals such as the Journal of Phonetics, the Journal of the International Phonetic Association, Language and Speech, Studies in Second Language Acquisition, Second Language Research, the International Journal of Bilingualism, Phonetica, Laboratory Phonology, Linguistics, Probus, Linguistic Approaches to Bilingualism, and Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone Linguistics.
