Should intelligent life someday discovered somewhere in space, how will the news be interpreted by modern theologians? That question will be posed and explored by Father Thomas F. O’Meara when he visits the University of Arizona on Wednesday, April 3rd. Fascinated by astronomy and the stunning vastness of the universe, Father O’Meara accepts as possible the thought that intelligent life may exist somewhere other than Earth. If that is someday proved, how will the news impact Christian belief? How might it shape all modern theologies?
A Dominican priest, Catholic theologian and Professor Emeritus at Notre Dame, Father O’Meara will be the featured speaker at the first Robert A. Burns Lecture April 3rd at 4:00 p.m. in the Kiva Room of the UA Student Union. The event, presented by the College of Humanities and the Religious Studies Department, is free and open to the public.
About the Author: Father O’Meara is a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America. He was a fulltime professor at Notre Dame from 1981 to 2002. Since “retiring,” he has taught at Notre Dame, Boston College, Loyola of Chicago and University of San Diego. He also has written a number of books. His latest, published last year, is entitled “Vast Universe: Extraterrestrials and Christian Revelation.”
