Germany in Europe

The UA College of Humanities proudly presents, “Germany in Europe,” which will be held from April 7th to April 12th, 2014 on the UA campus. Join us for an exciting week of events including panel discussions, presentations, a film screening and a performance celebrating German language and culture. All events are free and open to the public.

The week’s activities begin with a keynote speech by Ms. Sarah Lambert, Deputy Head of the Political Section of the Madrid office. The keynote speech titled “The European Union's New Normal: Recovering from the Euro Crisis” will take place on Monday, April 7th at 5:00 pm in the Kiva auditorium in the College of Education. A reception will follow.

On Tuesday, April 8th at 4:00 pm in Harvill 204, “Germany in Europe” features a panel of internationally renowned scholars who will examine the relationship between Germany and the EU. Professor Joyce Mushaben (University of Missouri) will look at Germany’s influence on the EU renewable energy/climate change policies. Professor Wolfgang Seibel (University of Konstanz/ Stanford University) will be exploring Germany as a hegemony in denial. Professor Paulette Kurzer (University of Arizona) will discuss the interaction between Germany and the EU’s foreign trade policy. Eva-Maria Maggi, a U of A lecturer in the School of Government and Public Policy, will moderate the panel.

On Wednesday, April 9th  at 4:00 pm in ILC 141, there will be an opportunity for students to explore the wide range of study abroad opportunities in Germany and Austria. Join us to hear from students about their study abroad experiences and from representatives from the Study Abroad/International Exchange about scholarship opportunities. The names of scholarship recipients for the Summer Abroad Program in Leipzig will be announced along with the winners of the treasure hunt organized by the Deutscher Studenten Klub. Pizza will be served.

On Thursday, April 10th   join the Deutscher Studenten Club for Stammtisch at Café Passe at 5:00 pm.  At 7:30 in Optical Sciences 408, the Department of German Studies film series will be screening:  Wir sitzen im Süden/ Based Down South, Martina Priessner, 2010) Deutschland / Türkei 2010, Dokumentarfilm).

On Friday, April 11th at 5:00 pm in the Poetry Center Rubel Room, “Germany in Europe” celebrates with a performance of German language and culture. The German department Max Kade Writer-in-Residence and distinguished Austrian author Phillip Weiss will read from his works in German followed by a reading in English. Fisch out of Water presents poetry readings of German poetry in multiple languages. Student posters featuring their interpretations of “Germany in Europe” will be on display and the poster winners announced. A reception will follow. This event is open to the public. 

On Saturday, April 12th, the final “Germany in Europe” event is a EU simulation. Political Science students in POL452 – “Politics in the European Union” simulate the negotiation of the EU's Head of Government and institutions to solve the Euro crisis. The EU model will be held Saturday at 10:00 am Social Sciences 222 and prizes will be awarded for the best negotiation performances. The judges will be Will Thoman, Eva-Maria Maggi, Bill Dixon, and Paulette Kurzer. The negotiation is open to the public.
