Perspectives Across the Pacific: Screening of "Letters From Iwo Jima"

When
6 to 8 p.m., Nov. 21, 2016

December 7, 2016 is the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Pearl Harbor. In preparation for this day of remembrance, join us for a free film series depicting the major Pacific War battles of Pearl Harbor and Iwo Jima and reflect on the legacy of these momentous events for the United States and Japan. East Asian Studies Assistant Professor, Nathaniel Smith, will lead a brief description after each film. All movies are free and open to the public and are sponsored by the College of Humanities, East Asian Studies and the University Libraries.

Film Series

Gallagher Theater, in the Student Union Memorial Center, will host a film series, showing movies that explore Pearl Harbor and the Battle of Iwo Jima. Each will start at 6 p.m.:

  • Nov. 7: "Tora! Tora! Tora!" is a 1970s film that recounts what lead up to the Pearl Harbor attack — and the attack itself.
  • Nov. 14: "Flags of Our Fathers" is a 2006 film directed and co-produced by Clint Eastwood and based on the book of the same name written by James Bradley and Ron Powers. The film details the 1945 Battle of Iwo Jima and its aftermath.
  • Nov. 21: "Letters From Iwo Jima," also a 2006 film directed and co-produced by Eastwood, portrays the Battle of Iwo Jima through the experience of Japanese soldiers. The film is meant to complement "Flags of Our Fathers."

In "Four Questions," Nathaniel Smith discusses film as a medium through which history can be explored and discussed across cultures. To read the full article in UA News, click here.
