Hip-hop legend Grandmaster Flash will make a special appearance at the University of Arizona as part of Black History Month events.

Sponsored by the UA College of Humanities' African Studies Program, Grandmaster Flash — considered one of the founding fathers of hip-hop — will give a lecture and live demonstration at Crowder Hall, 1017 N. Olive Ave., on Feb. 28 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public, and tickets will be provided at the door.

Recently, Grandmaster Flash collaborated with film director and producer Baz Luhrmann on the Netflix drama series "The Get Down." He also has been the recipient of numerous other awards, including "VH1 Hip Hop Honors: The Icon Award" from BET in honor of his contribution to hip-hop as a DJ; the Lifetime Achievement Award from the RIAA; and the Bill Gates Vanguard Award.

"Hip-hop has become an all-pervasive key component of contemporary American and international society, culture and identity. Its impact across humanities research warrants serious academic inquiry to advance humanities scholarship and address growing contemporary trends," said Alain-Philippe Durand, dean of the College of Humanities.
