Two outstanding Africana Studies students, Kelsey McGee and Desiree Ranshaw, have each been awarded a scholarship worth $8,500 to go toward their study abroad program in South Africa and Swaziland this summer. After a competitive selection process, they were awarded funding to attend the Geography of Health and Development summer study abroad program which is a field-based, five-week program studying both urban and rural communities.
The goal of this program is to give students an opportunity to analyze the relationship between local social structures and the global economy and how they can influence areas of development and health. Students will be able to work on their individual research projects while earning two hours of independent study credit. The program allows participants to choose two geography courses focused on topics such as the geography of development, health and the global economy. Overall, students will earn 8 hours of credit researching in Pretoria, South Africa and on a game reserve in Swaziland.
Join us in congratulating Kelsey and Desiree on this exciting, once in a lifetime endeavor!
