For tenure-eligible faculty, Retention Reviews (aka third-year reviews), conducted during the third year in rank, addresses progress toward promotion and tenure. The review is considered a "dress rehearsal" for the mandatory Promotion and Tenure Review in the sixth year. Therefore, the third-year review criteria are the same as for promotion and tenure. Procedures mirror those for promotion and tenure, with some differences in the preparation of the dossier and levels of review.
The University of Arizona Handbook for Appointed Personnel (UHAP) sets forth the official policies regarding the duties and responsibilities of faculty at The University of Arizona.
UHAP 3.3, Promotion and Tenure, serves as a reference for the Dean's Advisory Committee (DAC) in the development of the College of Humanities' promotion and tenure criteria and procedures in teaching, research, creative activity, service and outreach. These criteria and procedures are followed by all academic units in the college.
